Mother Mary of the Angels (Lorraine) Davis

Peacefully at the Carmel of St. Joseph, St. Agatha, Mother Mary of the Angels, O.C.D., foundress, passed into eternal life, on February 26, 2016 aged 92, in the 74th year of her religious life. Born March 31, 1923 in Biddeford, Maine, USA, to John Davis and Blanche (Benoit) , Lorraine was the 5th daughter in a family of 7. Raised in a devout, bilingual family, rich in musical talent, she entered the Carmelite Monastery in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, on February 1, 1943. On September 11, 1943, she received the Carmelite Habit and made her Perpetual Profession on April 14, 1948. On October 22, 1952, Mother Mary and 3 other sisters arrived in Kitchener to begin the first English-speaking monastery of Discalced Carmelite Nuns in Canada. For the next 30 years Mother Mary served as Prioress and Novice Mistress. She oversaw the transformation of the former Breithaupt residence at 2 Lancaster St. E. into a temporary monastery, the transfer of the community to their permanent home near St. Agatha, as well as the adjustment of the sisters’ way of life initiated by the Second Vatican Council. During an additional term as Prioress, Mother Mary travelled to BC to choose the site for a new Carmelite monastery, Armstrong, BC. On January 23, 2015, Mother celebrated her 70th Anniversary of Religious Profession. Over the years Mother brought comfort to many through her friendship, wise counsel and ardent prayers.

Mother Mary is survived by her religious sisters, her sister, Sr. Ellen Davis, RHSJ, (Montreal), and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, her sisters Anne Marie, Therese Paré, Rita, Sr. Lucille RHSJ and her brother John.
